What should you know about your Dog before you start training

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Ray Coleiro

In order to train your dog perfectly, you need to know him well - his needs, behavior, as well as moods. If you comprehend clearly the “world” of the Dog you will be able to train him perfectly –draw on his strengths and work on his weaknesses.

As you know, dogs including have descended from animals that lived in packs and their everyday instincts are based on that social structure. You need to learn about these inborn behavioral trends so you can use this knowledge to train your dog.

·Dominance and Hierarchy

Most dogs respond well to leadership or in the absence of a good leader, they will try and be the leader. In packs it is the leader or Alpha who decides on the actions of the family/group. Such as who will eat first, where to go, what to do, and so
on. So, in the “home” in our domesticated lives, the pack for your dog is you and your family. In order for life to be smooth you must assume the role of alpha.

So, if your dog is leading you on a merry dance, guess who the boss is? And, with your dog you need to establish your position and earn their respect if you want to successfully train them. Being alpha will enable you, to control your dog and instill good behavior. If you oscillate in your behavior or contantly change your position in your pack, ie sometimes the boss, while at other times your’e the slave, your dog will become very confused, and behave accordingly.

·Aggression:

This is a behavior that is deeply ingrained in the dog. In packs, animals establish territories and defend them with zeal.

This instinct is what makes your dog snappy and nippy. Any person, animal, or child that is seen as a threat is nipped. Always keep a watchful eye.

·Food Protection:

Many animals, will guard food. And when they feel any threat they will bark/bite. This is not to be encouraged. Food training is a must.

·Running away:

Many animals run away from danger. You may find that your dog also takes flight. Make him feel safe, protect him from the “demons,” help him overcome his fears. If you train your dog to be obedient you will not have to worry about “running away” he will happily, maintain a “sit” or “stay.”

·Socialization:

Since dogs live in packs in the wild they are never alone /lonely. Similarly, your dog cannot be left alone for long hourshe will become bored, unhappy, depressed, and chew things or trail toilet paper all over the house or bring the sheets down or
tumble the wash — anything that will draw your attention.

·Vocalization:

Animals in the wild communicate using different sounds. So barking is the way your dog communicates with you. Beware, some dogs are incessant barkers and could become a nuisance. You must teach “stop” or “no bark.”

So, if you understand “why” then you can do the needful.

Formulating a learning plan

Today there are tests that can be done that evaluate accurately the willingness of a dog to learn.

The test indicates:

·The dog’s ability to accept domination.
·The dog’s response to unfamiliar noise.
·The curiosity present.
·The dog’s fear level.
·The ability to fetch/retrieve.
·Stamina and motivation level.

The evaluation will help you in the learning plan that you formulate for your dog.

Whether you are a first time dog owner or a seasoned veteran, your learning never stops as far as it comes to training your dog. Each and every dog presents different training challenges, and the more equipped you are to handle these training issues
the more likely you are to prevent any permanent and long term future behavioral problems.

(Dog News) NC trooper fired for kicking dog wants job back - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

None of that was an issue until a trooper used his cellphone to record a video of a sergeant kicking his police dog repeatedly while it was leashed to a loading dock, its hind legs just touching the ground. Jones kicking Ricoh, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, five times, causing the dog to swing as much as two feet under the loading dock. Jones has violated — because there isn’t any,” said Jones’ attorney, Jack O’Hale, as he questioned the man who upheld Jones’ dismissal, North Carolina Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan Beatty. Beatty said Jones had acted inhumanely to the dog by kicking him and leaving him suspended from the dock rail, even after the dog had complied with Jones’ order. Herndon said he began recording Jones with the cellphone because he was concerned about what Jones was doing to the dog. The second video shows the dog still tied to the rail, as Jones walks around him, picks up the toy and then walks out of the camera frame. read more

3 Easy Ways to Get Your Dog to Stop Pulling on the Leash Fast

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Malacka

Dear Dog-Owner,

I can tell you’re taking me out for a walk because I hear
that familiar jingling of what you call a leash.

It’s probably the most exciting sound I hear all day so
you’ll have to excuse me if I get a bit impatient and
restless as you fasten the leash to my collar.

And yes, please forgive me if I charge out of the door and
begin dragging you down the street while you clasp onto dear
life holding the other end of the leash. You see… there
are certain things I need to do in the short amount of time
we’re outside and we’ve got to get moving fast! But before
we go, I’ll let you in on a couple of secrets…

Now, I shouldn’t be telling you this, because the next door
neighbor’s dog is going to be mighty upset if the word gets
out. So promise me you won’t mention it to him? Ok then.

There are three surefire things you can do right now to stop
your dog from “walking you” down the street instead of the
other way around…

First, hold the door open and then just let your dog pull
and strain against the leash until (s)he realizes that you
aren’t going to begin the walk until your dog settles down.
Now, it might take a while so just be patient.

Second, after placing the leash onto your dog’s collar, walk
him/her around your house, the back yard, the garage -
anywhere EXCEPT outside for a normal walk.

Third, there’s a little known fact that makes the first two
steps “stick” so that your dog learns to stop pulling on the
leash quickly and permanently. And you’ll be surprised when
you find out what it is.

It’s used by professional dog trainers all over and it’s
something they’ll charge you hundreds of dollars to learn.

Save your money and click here to discover the secret for
yourself:

(Dog News) Ex mayor loses Shih-Tzu - Baltimore Sun

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

A custody fight over a dog that led to the end of a small-town mayor’s political career was resolved Thursday when the ex-mayor was ordered to return the contested Shih Tzu to her neighbors. Believing her owners weren’t properly caring for the dog, the ex-mayor told them upon their return that Puddles had died, then kept the dog. In court, Saenz-Lopez insisted that Rudy Gutierrez and Shelly Cavazos had neglected the animal, but District Judge Richard Terrell in McAllen ordered her to give the dog back to the couple, the Associated Press reports. Previously he worked as a reporter, columnist, national correspondent and editor at four other newspapers, and received a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 1987 for his reporting on prisons and mental institutions for The Philadelphia Inquirer. read more

(Dog News) Dog beats odds to survive - Connecticut Post

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The staff at the hospital nursed the dog back to life after it was found near-death at Lake Mohegan. Lazarus, the dog left for dead at Lake Mohegan in Fairfield on a frosty March night, has four feet firmly in the land of the living today, and has started life over in a new home — and with a new name. It weighed 17 pounds, had a body temperature too low to register on a vet’s thermometer, had open sores — bedsores, of a sort — developed over a long period of immobility somewhere and, except for a twitching rear leg, appeared to be dead. That would include Brower, Maura Pixley, 32, the head technician; Michelle Kovalik, 22, a vet technician, and 65-year-old Pat Wilson, who lives above the office and helps out part time. The other day, in a back room at the at the Engelberg-Kristy Animal Hospital at 181 King’s Highway East in Fairfield, Lazlo greeted the assembled media — a reporter and a photographer. read more

Her Dog s Aggression Is Worse After In Kennel Training

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Adam Katz

A Bull Mastiff owner wrote me, with the following question:

“My problem comes in a 147-pound package. Mack is a 15 month-old Bull Mastiff. He has been in and out of training since he was 10 weeks old.

He was starting to show dominance aggression at around nine months, so I found a training facility that would in-kennel train him. He was there for seven weeks. When I got him back he seemed to have a bigger problem than when he left. I was told by the trainer that he showed no signs of aggression there. He also said that he would have to schedule an in-home session which would run me another $250+. As it is, I expected a whole lot more for my $1200.

He also told me I have to take him through the whole training course again myself starting at day one in order to establish my leadership role in the pack. I have done this and he does great when there are no strangers around but if a neighbor goes out into his yard or one of my brothers stops by, forget it. He goes into attack mode. No fear in it by the way. I’m at my wits end. My brother is telling me I’ll have to have him put to sleep before he hurts someone. I definitely do not agree with this; I just need to know EXACTLY what to do.

Its hard to desensitize him to strangers when the ones that know him won’t come around and if I take him out around people I have a hard time controlling him because he out weighs me by about 30 pounds. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate any.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
MaryAnne

Dear MaryAnne:

What your trainer said is right, and should have probably been done the first time. Your dog is seeing the kennel trainer as the Alpha and obeying him, but has no working relationship with you as the Alpha. This is the problem with in-kennel training, in that the dog gets no one-on-one work with the owner, who is supposed to be the Alpha and have that position firmly established through obedience and the Nothing In Life Is Free program.

For now, you will want to start from square one as though he has never been trained and teach him what the commands are. This might go a bit quicker than normal because of the previous obedience experience. Use a prong collar on him: it has been referred to many times as a hearing aid collar and used on dogs that outweigh their owners, much like your situation.

When you reach the correction phase, where you teach the dog that each and every command MUST be obeyed, be very firm. If he is out in the yard, don’t give him freedom off-leash until he can be under control. Work obedience with him in the yard so he learns that even in that area, he should listen to you. This applies too when the neighbor appears on the scene. With the prong collar, you will be able to give motivational corrections, even though you are outweighed by the dog.

Man who swung dog ‘like a lasso’ found guilty - ic Wales- Dog News

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

A GWENT man has been found guilty of using a dog lead like a ‘lasso’ to swing a tiny terrier around his head and into a metal road sign. Paul Anthony Walters, aged 40, of Alma Street, Brynmawr, had pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to cross breed terrier Megan. However, after a two-and-a-half-hour trial magistrates at Abergavenny court found Walters guilty of the offence that took place on Saturday, October 20, 2007, the day of the Rugby World Cup final. Mr Morris told the court that at closest he was a foot away from Walters and the dog. The court then heard evidence from vets Helen Graffam and Sophie Daniels who examined Megan on October 21 and October 22 respectively. Both witnesses told the court that Walters was swinging Megan around by a brown leather lead, Walters denies owning such a lead and said he uses a pull cord lead that he had lost since the incident. read more

A Dog Friend

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Arvind Katoch

Today is public holiday in India. It is 6′o clock in the evening. I am standing on the roof of my house. It has started getting some dark. I am feeling very sad. Life looks miserable to me. Every decision, I have taken up to now look wrong. My confidence level is lowest. Feel like a loser, who is not able to achieve anything. Luck looks does not favoring me. Every thing looks confusing. Mind has come to a halt and accepting its defeat. Body, mind and soul all are losing their equilibrium. Getting more frustrated while considering the future. For me no light looks coming from anywhere. It looks as everything is lost. I have never so much sad earlier ever. Then what has happen now.

This may be the frustration of not achieving my desired goals. In this comparing world, found myself losing the grip of my self and my goals. Things have not gone as thought. Friends and relatives success are arises self comparison in me. Feeling shamed of this state. Every body is busy in its life. No help looks coming from any side, making me more and more helpless of this. Why is this to me? I asked this question to the God. What like every time no reply.

Then suddenly my attention goes to a small dog playing in the grass. I know him; he is the same small puppy of street. Puppy is alone, but still he looks very happy. He is rolling here and their. Running on the grass like a mad dog. He looks like a most happy dog on the earth. His face is shinning like God. He looks like the messenger of God. I looked at him and than at myself. Why this difference of happiness is their. Why this dog is happier?

If I compare my self with the dog, than I have much more then him. A job, a house and specially food for the evening. Where as the dog has to look for the food in evening. He has to even fight for the basic thing of life. Chances are that, he has to stays without food tonight. But still he is happy, because he living in this movement. He not concerned about the future. He is enjoying the present. He is not comparing himself with the other dogs. He not frustrated by the happiness of other dogs.

Now by looking at myself, I have realized that I have gone lower to even a small dog. I mental state is even poor than this innocent dog. What has happened to me? I have studied so many things. My knowledge level is much more than this small dog. However in happiness, he is the king and I am bagger. The reason is clear; his happiness depends upon himself and not upon others. He is living in present and enjoying it. He doesn’t have the big goals to fulfill. He has no ego to satisfy.

Life is not achieving big dreams or creating wealth. It is much more then this. We lose most of our life in these issues. Most of the time, we are in dreaming about future or worrying some outcome in future. Or we are busy in comparing our self with others. Why? Because we have learned this only. Every body around us is doing the same. Planning about the future is ok. But it should not over burden us. We have to take a lesson from this small puppy and start enjoying our life.
