A JET-setting dog lover spent 30 hours getting to Sydney - then jumped on the first plane home after learning her dog was missing back in London. Ms Dawson left her fiance Sam Pritchard-Gordon at the airport and spent $7000 on a ticket for the next flight home to help with the search for the five-year-old pet. The dog is believed to have escaped after airport staff opened her travel kennel to give her a walk before putting her on the plane. The back-to-back long-haul flights had a happy ending for Ms Dawson - a week later the dog turned up in a garden a few kilometres from the airport. read more

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A co-defendant in the dog-fighting case against Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has changed his plea to guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, court documents showed on Monday. District Court in Richmond, Virginia, where Vick is due to go on trial on November 26 on charges that he helped run an interstate dog-fighting enterprise known as “Bad Newz Kennels” from early 2001 through April 2007. Co-defendant Tony Taylor, who with Vick and two others pleaded not guilty on Thursday to the charges against him, would likely receive a lesser sentence in exchange for his cooperation with the government. According to a grand jury indictment, the dog-fighting enterprise was based at a property in Smithfield, Virginia, that was owned by Vick. The NFL asked him not to attend preseason training with the Falcons while it conducts a review of the indictment, and athletic clothing makers Reebok and Nike have suspended sales of products endorsed by Vick. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a civil rights group, said on Monday that Vick, who is black, had been unfairly demonized. read more

Dog News - ANIMAL HOUSE: Dog case gets folks fighting mad - Newsday

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

They noted items that, when considered in toto, signaled dogfighting, such as pry bars (used to break a dog’s hold during a fight), electronic treadmills (for conditioning), rape stands (a necessity when you breed dogs whose overriding impulse is to eviscerate their own kind, regardless of what their hormones say) and bloodstained carpeting, which needs no explanation. Before a fight, the dogs were bathed - presumably by their opponent’s owner - to ensure their coats were not doused with substances, such as kerosene or narcotics, that would affect the other dog. For all the terrible things said about the “true nature” of pit bulls, if only this inherent appreciation for human contact - without which a fighting dog cannot be fought - would get some traction. While the anger is understandable, it also should be channeled into efforts to ensure that dogfighting by anyone - not just a sports celebrity - receives the kind of public outcry and demands for justice that Vick has unleashed. read more
